For over 6 years Simon Joanes has been producing accredited work as a director of live music performances, music-based documentaries and short films.
His passion for music is reflected in the vast diversity of projects in which he has been involved, from multi-camera shoots like Radio 3's, "Sir John Eliot Gardner Presents Bach" Christmas special, to a Paolo Nuttini live homecoming DVD.
From 2002 Simon directed on T4's Popworld, where he gained invaluable experience of shooting multi-camera performances. Working with the likes of Britney Spears and Snow Patrol was also a great opportunity to work with some of the biggest stars in the music world.
Branching out into music documentaries, Simon was involved with the "Carling Homecoming" series, taking the likes of the Manic Street Preachers, Primal scream and Jamiroquai back to their hometowns for a one-off gig.
In 2004 he directed "Chancers", a 9-part, fly-on-the-wall series for T4, following the progression of six young musicians as they crossed the Atlantic aiming to break the American market. He continued to direct performances on "Popworld" and later directed eight 5-minute pilots for Fresh One Productions.
Simon's grasp of directing was sharpened by many years spent at the business end of a camera, working on nearly 10 year's worth of different programmes. He still enjoys being behind the camera and shot the unique and eclectic "Truck Fest" for Channel 4.
Simon also directed a selection of "JD Set Presents", a 24-part series for CC Lab broadcast on Channel 4. These 15-minute films, including interviews and live performances, showcase some of the finest new talent, including Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, The Rapture and Kate Nash.
In 2007 Simon directed the main stage at Bestival, resulting in three Channel 4 documentaries, including explosive performances from The Gossip, the Beastie Boys and Primal Scream.
Besides his TV work, Simon has also directed and engineered several web projects, including The BBC's coverage of Glastonbury's "Introducing" Stage and the Dirty Pretty Things for Yahoo Music (featuring the band playing an exclusive acoustic set).
He also masterminded BBC Radio 3's "The Tchaikovsky Experience", set within the dramatic interior of the Imperial War Museum. This offbeat setting provided him with a chance to explore the incongruous relationship between music and the darker side of human nature.
Large-scale orchestral symphony, numerically and harmonically bolstered by a voluble and almost haunting choir, is set against a striking visual backdrop of military planes, tanks and heavy artillery. Using his experience of large-scale contemporary music performances, Simon was able to offer an alternative view of classical music, as well as capturing some unique and distinctive angles.
